Digital signage on Android TV and Google TV

Most TVs sold today run Android TV or Google TV — Sony, Philips, TCL, Hisense, Xiaomi and more. That makes them ready-made signage players: install the free PlainSignage app, enter the 6-character code in the console and the screen is yours. Content is cached on the TV, so it keeps playing when the internet drops, and it starts automatically when the TV switches on.

Set-up steps

  1. 1Download the PlainSignage player (APK) on the TV — via the browser, a USB stick or a file-transfer app — and install it
  2. 2Open the app: a 6-character pairing code appears
  3. 3In the console, click Add screen and type the code
  4. 4Pick a template, publish — the TV shows it within a second

Good to know

Any Android TV / Google TV with Android 7 or newer works. For TVs without Android, plug in a Fire TV stick or an Android TV box.

Frequently asked questions

Is the app in the Play Store?

The player is distributed as a signed APK from plainsignage.com so it can auto-start and run full screen on every device; sideloading takes one minute — the help center shows how.

Does the TV need to stay on?

Set screen hours in the console: the player blanks the screen outside opening hours and many TVs can be scheduled to power on and off.

Which resolution is supported?

Full HD and 4K; the editor previews at the TV's exact aspect ratio.
