Church digital signage: announcement screens that volunteers can run

Church digital signage on the TV you own: verse of the day from public-domain Bibles, service agenda, special days, a donation thermometer and prayer times — edited by volunteers in a browser.

In short

A church announcement screen replaces the paper notice board with a TV that shows this week's services, a verse of the day, upcoming special days and a live donation goal — and it is updated by whoever has ten minutes on Thursday evening. PlainSignage runs on any Android TV or Fire TV stick, includes a “Community hall” template, uses only public-domain Bible translations (KJV, Statenvertaling, Luther 1545, Louis Segond 1910, Reina-Valera 1909) so nothing needs a licence, and costs €14.99 per month for the first screen.

Why a screen beats the notice board

Paper notices go stale, get pinned over each other and are unreadable from the coffee corner. A single TV at the entrance or in the hall shows the same information large, updates itself, and can rotate between the service programme, groups and courses, birthdays and a message from the pastor. The people who see it most — newcomers on a Sunday morning — get the answers they came for: what time, which room, who to talk to.

The trick is keeping it maintained. That is why everything in this guide can be edited in a browser by a volunteer with no design skills, and why the widgets that matter update themselves: the verse of the day, special days, the agenda from your calendar.

What to show: a proven layout

Start from the “Community hall” template in the worship industry set. It places a verse of the day, this week's agenda and the coming holidays on a warm paper background with your logo. From there, most churches add one or two of the items below.

  • Verse of the day — rotates daily, in your language, from a public-domain translation
  • Agenda — services, groups, choir practice, courses, pulled from a Google or Outlook calendar
  • Special days — Advent, Easter, Pentecost and national holidays for your country
  • Donation goal — a thermometer towards the roof fund or the food bank drive
  • Welcome text for newcomers, the Wi-Fi card, and a QR code to the newsletter

Verse of the day without licensing worries

Modern Bible translations are copyrighted; displaying them publicly needs permission from the publisher. PlainSignage's verse widget only uses public-domain translations — the King James Version and World English Bible in English, the Statenvertaling in Dutch, Luther 1545 and Schlachter in German, Louis Segond 1910 in French and Reina-Valera 1909 in Spanish — so every screen is legally clean. The widget picks a verse from a curated list of well-known passages that rotates by date, and shows the reference and translation name underneath.

For mosques the same widget shows an ayah of the day with the Arabic text and the public-domain Pickthall (1930) English translation, and the prayer times widget shows the five daily prayers for your city with the next one highlighted.

The agenda that updates itself

If your church keeps a Google Calendar or a Microsoft 365 calendar, publish it as an ICS link (Settings → Integrate calendar in Google; Share → Publish in Outlook) and paste it into the agenda or calendar widget. Every service, group meeting and course appears with time and room, and the screen changes when the calendar changes — no one has to touch the console for weekly updates. Without a shared calendar, the agenda widget takes a typed list that is just as quick to edit.

Donations with a visible goal

The goal tracker draws a thermometer, bar or ring towards a target: “Roof fund €12,400 of €20,000”. Type the current amount in the console whenever the treasurer updates it, or point the widget at a JSON URL from your donation platform so it updates itself. Pair it with a QR code to your giving page and the screen becomes the gentlest fundraiser in the building.

Set up in an afternoon

You need a TV and, if it is not an Android TV or Google TV, a Fire TV stick or an Android TV box for about €35–60. Install the player, enter the pairing code in the console, apply the Community hall template, replace the sample texts with yours and press publish. Set screen hours so the TV turns on before the first service and off after the last group leaves.

Add two or three volunteers as editors by sharing the login; the editor is a browser page, the templates are one click, and every change is live within a second.

Cost

One screen costs €14.99 per month with every widget included; a second screen for the hall or the youth room is €4.99 more. The 14-day trial needs no card, so the council can see it running before deciding. See pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Bible verses free to display in public?

Yes. The widget uses only public-domain translations (KJV, WEB, Statenvertaling, Luther 1545, Schlachter, Louis Segond 1910, Reina-Valera 1909), so no publisher licence is needed.

Can volunteers update the screen from home?

Yes. The console is a browser page; anyone with the login can change texts, the agenda and images from any computer, and the screen updates within a second.

Does it work for a mosque?

Yes. The prayer times widget shows the five daily prayers for your location with the next one highlighted, and the verse widget can show an ayah of the day with Arabic text and the Pickthall translation.

Can we show the service live?

The screen is for announcements and information. For a live video feed you would use your streaming setup on the hall's TV; PlainSignage can show a YouTube video or playlist between services.

What if the internet drops on Sunday?

The player keeps the last published content and continues playing it offline; live widgets show their last data until the connection returns.
